Taking bets?

last night I had a bowl of soup with an old friend, a full-time techie, one-time journalist and a veteran blogger who has done the rounds of several media groups. In his inimitable self, he spoke about the mistakes that several groups - but two large television groups in particular have made - especially regarding their insane online strategies. the massive portal strategy of one group is sinking and the other group has hired two has-beens with horrible track records to run their online operation - which is on a Yahoo-esque spree of launching inane sites!
Anyway, it would be a lie to say that there is no cash out there - there is a lot of cash out there - it is just that people are holding onto it for dear life. And this means that quite a few TV channels are finding it rather difficult to survive. The only people in any position of power - the dominant players in the language media papers and magazines.
So if teh bad times continue for a another six-eight months will any TV channel shut down? Do you think they will? Comments welcome.

...and people thought only newspapers can't digest new media.....by the way...how's tv 18 doing ?...according to some though they are incurring massive losses on moneycontrol and in.com...they are still going ahead with a hindi avatar of both these sites

Aren't you talking about TV18 and NDTV?
It also looks like Sanjay Trehan and Arunava Sinha are in firing line here!

Don't know if you noticed.. IBN LIVE (one of the companies u referred to?) shifted to the .in.com to increase traffic to the .in domain and timesofindia followed suit.
Now TOI site is at timesofindia.indiatimes.com/ pretty short URL no?

Frankly, most of the channels don't deserve to be on air anyway! They are so full of crap, like some of the channels from zee bouquet and even Sony. The airwaves would be a lot better if some of thse jokers were sent packing.

Hi,

I just realised the media's biggest cheerleader has got an international tie-up with an 'iconic' leader from the US! Yes, the e4m 'partnership' with adage. Funny that the said leader has not deigned to mention it in their own website at all.

Funnier still is the fact that adage seems to have gone totally free now, so I really wonder what the content partnership brings to the table now.
On a serious note, those who track the India media's rise and fall will only need to track Mr Anurag Batra's expansion and claims, as with all due credit to him, this man actually believes the bullshit he spews. Or he is the best living testimony to the power of networking, or keeping everyone happy. His last spam missive for the industry had these gems of wisdom: TV industry needs to get more innovative, the dailies need to look at online, and magazines need to perk up and get more, what else, innovative! Amazing!!

Often wonder why the junta on this blog hates Mint so much...one sometime feels that there are lot of people here who couldn't make the cut at Mint and are jealous of their relatively well paid journos working there...anyways....haven't seen any retort from the junta at Mint , so I guess they don't really care much ...by the way according to friend in the business side, their revenues finally seems to be looking up (thanks to IRS Round 2) and they are all set to expand across the country over the next few months.

Looks like this ship ain't goin down anytime soon.

Went to visit a friend who is a senior leading lawyer, does a lot of work for good of mankind etcetc., in his conference room was a delagation of ex-HT employees, and the bigger problem they seem to be facing is that while not only has the job gone but also their existence is in danger because of past friends/alliances.enmities etcetc.

Yep... Mint is hiring in Delhi, according to reliable sources. (Suku : P) So is Business Standard. It's not all gloom and doom, after all.

Hey K. The buzz is that UTVi has enough money only to breathe until June. All of Ronnie's attempts at roping in financial/strategic investors are falling flat. He's spoken to Bennett, STAR, India Today, Dainik Bhaskar etc etc. No one's interested anymore. A pity, coz the talent in there is largely high-quality, barring the crap they've pulled from Times NOW.
Do fill us in on what's happening there.
