Movements...

The latest, according to some text messages doing the rounds is that Jaggi (R Jagannathan, Editor, DNA) is the man who might be called to head up the FT-TV18 Joint-Venture after Ravi Dhariwal slew Haresh Chawla on the battlefield of offers and counter-offers.
What is this about senior members of HT's editorial staff going to Police Stations to file FIR's about computers getting hacked? Anyway, the latest doing the rounds when it comes to the Birla paper is that Sid Varadarajan or Swapan Dasgupta might be the papers next editor. Sounds rather incredulous, because the political views of both these men are almost totally opposite. But the question is would anyone choose to join a sinking ship, since many others have refused. Anyway, with Sharad Pawar's paper luring away half of HT (a Delhi launch on the cards?), there might not be much of a ship to right.

Considering there is about a 10 year age gap and an even wider ideological gulf between Varadarajan and Dasgupta, (and between them and Echtee) why would you speak of them in the same breath? Have you, incidentally considered Varadarajan's brother Tunku? He recently quit Wall Street Journal in the US and is teaching. Given Echtee's love of phoren types, maybe Tunku's the Varadarajan being wooed?!

Siddharth and Tunku Varadarajan are brothers? Interesting bit of trivia.

Ahem, I think it is the younger V because there are at least two witnesses I know who saw Mrs B and Sid V in earnest conversation at the Oberoi recently. But there is some relevant history. My source on KG Marg tells me HT tried hiring Tunku two years back and the V even met him in New york. But the guy was not interested and why would he be? So they went for Kalbag eventually. Incidentally, there is a history to HT looking at the Hindu. Four years ago, they were very keen to bring Khare as editor but Malini P used her friendship with Mrs B to push a no poaching deal. But now there is no Malini any more so may be Ht could prise Sid V away. Stay tuned.

Thanks for referring Tunku. I am sure K will certainly consider him, particularly because of the 'Spoonerism potential' of the name, when spoken in Bengali.

and, with dear "swapnay" - would VS' "Princess" risk the wrath of the lady at 10 Janpath ? - (especially after the real "Prince" has been elevated to the ministerial chair!!) and re: the varadarajans there might be a minor technical glitch - their US Citizenship - tho' Madam has managed to circumvent it in the case of the NRI Telegu Ed of MINT. But, no one in their right senses would take up the job - with the other guy peering over their shoulder and waiting to pull the plug at the first opportunity, as he did for C-Bags

some of my journo friends keep talking abt this site (never taking it seriously tho), but i find it singularly off track and irresponsible. there seems to be some sort of strange bias against HT, which is all right, but why put in stuff that is way off the mark? peter bhatia joining as ed in chief? no way. The V coming back? wrong again. the 'executive editor' leaving becos of some MMS? there's no executive editor in HT to the best of my knowledge. if u are talking abt PP, he's managing editor, and no, he hasn't quit. what MMS? has anyone seen it? you are right, don't trust the indian media -- u guys must be part of the great Indian media circus. and why direct anger at HT? how come other papers -- like The Pioneer or Times -- never get attacked? food for thot. guys, get a life -- and stop bitching.

I have finally become tired of the increasingly , mad, color layout of the HT. It increasingly looks like a comic-with so many pictures, the writing is bad, the language terrible. Was there any point in the story on Mauritius by V in Brunch?

I could not take the daily assault on the senses.
After reading it for 15 years , I have switched to the TOI, even though I dont agree with their point of view. HT used to stand for something, not it is just a bad copy of TOI.There seems to be something rotten in KG Marg. They cant get the basics of journalism right
